This plan describes a common estate-planning pattern. It is not legal advice. Consult a licensed attorney for guidance specific to your situation.

What this planning pattern covers

The Will-Centric Core pattern is commonly discussed for households where children are the primary planning priority — especially renters who don’t have a primary property asset driving the plan, but do have dependents whose care needs to be structured.

Core will with guardian nomination. For households with minor children, naming a guardian is often cited as the most time-sensitive planning step. The core will establishes who you want to raise your children and who handles your estate.

Durable financial power of attorney. Names your financial decision-maker if you’re incapacitated.

Health care proxy and living will. Names your medical decision-maker and records your preferences for end-of-life care.

Beneficiary designation checklist. A structured review to ensure retirement accounts and insurance align with your intentions.

Who typically considers this pattern

Renters with children — especially single parents — often find this pattern to be the right starting point. The guardian nomination and incapacity documents address the most common and time-sensitive concerns.

What this pattern does not address

This pattern focuses on will-based and incapacity planning. Homeownership-related property tools (like transfer-on-death deeds) aren’t part of this pattern since it’s designed for renters. Complex situations may require additional professional guidance.
